How to Properly Dispose of Your Renovation Waste

Share this Post:

Proper renovation waste disposal starts before you ever fill a dumpster. Renovating your home comes with a satisfying kind of chaos — torn-out cabinets, old flooring, broken tile, drywall dust everywhere. But once the sledgehammers go quiet, you’re left with a pile of debris that isn’t as simple to get rid of as regular household trash.

Here’s what you need to know before you start tossing things into a dumpster.

What’s Off-Limits for Renovation Waste Disposal

Most renovation debris is dumpster-friendly, including:

  • Drywall and plaster
  • Wood, trim, and cabinetry
  • Flooring (tile, carpet, vinyl, hardwood)
  • Countertops (non-hazardous materials)
  • Fixtures like sinks, toilets, and light fixtures
  • General construction debris (nails, screws, small metal scraps)

If you’re not sure whether something counts as “general debris,” a good rule of thumb: if it came apart with a hammer and a crowbar, it’s probably fine.

What’s Off-Limits

Certain materials are restricted from all dumpsters due to safety and environmental regulations, including:

  • Paint, stains, and solvents, and the cans/buckets that hold them — these count as hazardous waste in liquid form
  • Hazardous/Asbestos-containing materials — common in older homes with popcorn ceilings or old tile adhesive; requires specialized abatement
  • Propane tanks and aerosol cans — pressurized containers are a safety hazard

If your renovation touches any of these, do not put them in the dumpster.

A Few Renovation-Specific Tips

Budget for extra weight. Every dumpster includes a set weight allowance (2,000 or 4,000 lbs depending on size), but going over isn’t a problem, it just costs extra. If your renovation involves heavy materials like tile, or drywall, plan for the possibility of an overage charge rather than assuming you’ll stay under the included weight.

Some materials need their own dedicated dumpster. Concrete, vegetation, and shingles can’t be mixed in with general renovation debris, but that doesn’t mean they’re off-limits. We have dedicated dumpsters available for each of these, so if your project includes any of them, you can select them when you book.

Ask before you assume. Not sure if something’s allowed? A two-minute phone call beats finding out the hard way that a load got flagged at drop-off.
